Alcohol & Other Drugs (AOD)

Medical services for students with AOD concerns

Many college students have concerns about the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. The Dartmouth College Health Service offers education, consultation, and referral that is sensitive to the challenges students face regarding alcohol and drug use.

Our staff provides services for students who want to learn more about their own use, reduce or eliminate their use, or are worried about a friend or family member’s use.

We provide confidential, non-judgmental care. The Dartmouth College Health Service also collaborates with members of the campus community as well as service providers in the Hanover area.

BASICS

BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) is a program designed to help you make decisions around drinking based on your own values to minimize harmful effects in your life.  It is a confidential one-on-one session with a Wellness Center provider using your personal survey responses.

Counseling for Individuals

Changing any behavior is hard to do. Talking with a counselor at the Health Service can help you develop strategies for reducing use or abstaining from alcohol or other drugs. A counselor can help you address any underlying problems (e.g., family issues, depression, or anxiety) that may be contributing to your use of substances. Learn about individual counseling and other services from the Counseling Center.

Consultation Services

Friends and loved ones are often the first to notice a substance use problem. Talking to a friend about their drinking or drug use can be difficult. The Dartmouth College Health Service staff in both the primary care and counseling departments are available to consult with students about how to help others.
