The iRest Yoga Nidra wellness course is an 8-week meditation program (with an additional orientation week) created by psychologist and yogi, Dr. Richard Miller, based on the ancient tradition of Yoga Nidra. iRest was adapted to Western psychology and neuroscience and has been used as a mindfulness intervention that decreases stress and depression for many populations. Each class will focus on a different iRest skill from body scans to embracing opposing emotions and conclude with a poem and written reflection. Students have the opportunity to learn about the skill, practice in class, and then are given audio resources to practice at home. To enrich their practice, students will be assigned brief readings, associated worksheets, and will fill out meditation logs to record and reflect on their at-home practice.
The 8-week Foundations of Mindfulness course blends practice, reflection, and science to help students explore mindfulness in school, work, and daily life. Grounded in both ancient wisdom and modern research, the class weaves together historical roots, neuroscience, and psychology while offering direct experience and dialogue. Participants leave with a practical, personal understanding of mindfulness that builds resilience, presence, and clarity to support wellbeing and growth across all areas of life.
This class will meet Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 4:45pm in Dartmouth Hall 105.
Register required through DartHub using CRN 92773.

What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga nidra is a type of meditation practice originating from ancient India, commonly known as "yogic sleep" or "dynamic sleep." It is a contemplative practice that involves following guided prompts while lying in a comfortable position through various stages of relaxation, breathing exercises, and visualization.
This practice aims to induce a state of deep relaxation and meditation, similar to the liminal state between waking and sleeping. This state can provide numerous physical, emotional, and mental benefits, such as reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep, enhancing creativity, and promoting overall well-being. In this state, you may experience a sense of timelessness, expansiveness, and interconnectedness.

It is not required that you complete this for the credit, but we want you to have access to it at the start of term. The course will prompt you to keep a "30-second sleep journal" every morning and read one short module every week that contains info, tips, and practice for the week.
