COSO Recognition Tiers
Effective Fall 2026
The Council on Student Organizations categorizes student clubs into two tiers. Tier 1 is full recognition and Tier 2 is recognized with restrictions. Tiers are determined during the recognition process.
Tier 1 - Recognized
- Student-run organizations that consistently demonstrate programming activity, community engagement, and financial responsibility. The majority of clubs fall in this category.
- Student organizations must abide by the Privileges and Expectations of Recognized Student Organizations.
- Recognized student organizations are eligible to request funding from COSO.
Tier 2 - Recognized with Restriction
- Student-run organizations that have met the basic recognition requirements for COSO but are not eligible for funding. They still:
- Are officially recognized by COSO
- Must follow the Privileges and Expectations of Recognized Student Organizations.
- Tier 2 organizations are not eligible to receive COSO funding. This includes COSO allocated, Big Policy meeting, recruitment, and start-up funds.
