Applying for First-Year Housing

Housing Information

Every Dartmouth student is randomly assigned a membership to one of the six House Communities. Most incoming first-year students will live on a first-year floor with other members of their House Community.

Living Learning Communities (LLCs) are a way to deepen your engagement at Dartmouth around a particular topic. Of our 24 LLCs, 12 are open to first-year students. We encourage you to consider applying to up to 3 LLCs in your housing application. Regardless of where you live your first year, you will have a House Community membership and will be invited to events and activities with your House Professor. If you choose to live in a Living Learning Community, you will also be invited to activities for that LLC and you will have the chance to get to know the House Professor of the LLCs as well.

Your housing and roommate assignments are made based on information you provide in the lifestyle survey of your housing application. While the lifestyle survey questions offer only a glimpse into your personality and living preferences, we have found them to be good indicators of roommate compatibility. It is important that you answer these survey questions realistically and honestly. 

First-year housing consists of singles, doubles, triples, and quads. The majority of our rooms are carpeted. We do not accept building/location, House Community, or roommate requests from incoming first-year students.

Please note that smoking is not permitted in any residence halls.

Housing Application

All incoming first-year students are required to live on campus and must complete the online housing application by the June 8, 2017 deadline. To do so, please:

  • Go to Banner Student.
  • Provide your Dartmouth NetID and password to authenticate your identity.
  • Click on: Undergraduate Pre-Arrival Menu
  • Click on: Information Required Prior to Check-In
  • Click on: Housing Application - Incoming First-Year Students
  • Click on: Application 
  • Select the "201709-Fall 2017" option. Please do not fill out the "820176-Spring/Summer Interim" application as it is not applicable to you at this time.
  • Click on: Continue
  • Proceed through the application. You will see a confirmation screen once your application is complete. You have up until the deadline to make changes to your application in Banner Student even if you have already submitted it.

You will receive mail (to the permanent address on record) and email (to your Dartmouth email account) in late July/early August that includes your House membership and room assignment.
