Room Selection Numbers & Roommate Groups

How Room Selection Works

Things to remember!

  • Your roommate group must have the right number of members to fill all beds in the room. For example, a double requires two people, while selecting a single means you cannot be in a roommate group.
  • Everyone in a roommate group must have a completed housing application and must not be assigned housing through a previous process.
  • If participating in your House Room Draw, all group members much belong to your House Community.
  • Your assignment is for the fall term. You must confirm housing plans for winter and spring through the Housing Intent/Application for each term.
  • For Hanover Senior Apartments, juniors and seniors who applied by April 3rd will be notified of any eligibility issues on April 4th. Eligible students will receive instructions on how their Roommate Group leader must verify their group by April 7th. On April 8th, group leaders will receive their timeslot for the Hanover Senior Apartment Room Draw. Timeslots are assigned based on class year, with all-senior groups  receiving the earliest timeslots, followed by mixed senior-junior groups, and finally all-junior groups.
  • For Summit on Juniper, House Community, and All-House Room Draws, roommate groups can be created, changed, or dissolved at any time before or during your Room Draw timelot. Remember: The group member with the best selection number should be the "Group Leader", as only they can select a room and assign members.

Room Selection Numbers

Students with completed applications receive a random room selection number. Sophomores who applied by the March 3rd Sophomore Guarantee deadline will receive their room selection numbers on March 4th. Juniors and seniors will be issued numbers the weeks of March 24th, April 14th and April 21st. Once issued, your specific number for the fall will be available in your fall application on your Housing Portal.

  • Rising Seniors (Class of 2026 and older): 1 - 1200
  • Rising Juniors (Class of 2027): 1201 - 2400
  • Rising Sophomores (Class of 2028): 2401 - 3600

Not every room selection number is used during fall room draw, so having number 101 doesn't make you the 100th person to select a room.

Roommate Groups

Roommate groups are needed whenever two or more students hope to select a room or apartment together. Within the Fall Housing application is a place to create or join a roommate group. For students going through Summit, House Community or All-House Room Draw, the student with the best room selection number should create the roommate group and the other member or members will join the group. Seniors and juniors going through Hanover Senior Apartment Room Draw can have any member of the group be the group leader.

Students applying to a Living Learning Community and/or going through either apartment process or All-House Room Draw can be part of roommate groups with members of different House Communities. To select a multi-occupancy room within your House Community, you must be part of a roommate group with members of your own House and have a group whose size matches the number of beds within the room (i.e. - two people cannot select a triple but can select a double). Roommate groups can be created, changed and/or dissolved up until a room is selected.

Hanover Senior Apartment Roommate Groups - Housing staff will review the list of students who applied for this process by the April 3rd deadline and notify those who are not eligible. Those eligible to participate, will be given instructions on how the roommate group leaders will verify their roommate groups by April 7th. Roommate groups cannot be changed once verified. Roommate groups that are all seniors will be randomly assigned the first time slots, then those that are a combination of seniors and juniors, and then the all junior groups.

Room Selection Timeslots

Your timeslot is the designated date and time when you can access the room selection pages in the Housing Portal. Each room selection process begins at 4pm (ET) and continues until all timeslots have been used or all available rooms have been selected.

Timeslot Notification Schedule:

  • Hanover Senior Apartments - Sent on April 8th
  • Summit Apartments - Sent on April 18th
  • House Community - Sent on April 25th
  • All-House (Ripley, Woodward, Smith) - Sent the morning of May 1st

Room Selection Process:

  1. When your timeslot opens, go to DartHub, Housing StarPortal and select your Fall Application.
  2. You will gain access to the Room Selection area at the start of your timeslot.
  3. On the Online Room Selection page, click "Building" on the right-hand side to begin.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to select your room.

Important Notes:

  • For Summit, House Community and All-House Room Draws, everyone receives a timeslot - even if they are part of a roommate group. This ensures that if groups change, each person still has access.
  • When your timeslot opens, you and others with the same timeslot can enter the selection pages.
  • If you don't select a room within your 10-minute timeslot, you will still have access, but additional students will also gain entry to select rooms.

Vacancy List

The vacancy list will be available on DartHub, under the Room Draw Vacancy Report (you can find this using the search function or by going to the Housing and Campus Services tiles). You will receive an email the morning of your Room Draw, when it becomes available.

Manipulating the System

Manipulation of the room selection number system cheats your fellow students and is considered a serious infraction. Students who are determined to have manipulated the room selection number system face penalties including removal from housing and/or other disciplinary action.
