Jason Riley, a senior fellow at Manhattan Institute and author of the book Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Makes it Harder for Blacks to Succeed, will join the Dartmouth Libertarians for a conversation about welfare and how it impacts minorities (followed by a Q&A session.) Often times, committed to egalitarian missions, we advocate for welfare programs, in hopes that that they will provide a safety net for everyone and/or lift the most disadvantaged population out of poverty. However, Jason thinks they have the opposite effect. We believe that the deep commitment to minority rights translates into a proportionately strong passion for learning about the potentially detrimental impact of welfare programs in minority communities. Therefore, we are eager to incorporate Jason's counterintuitive insights into the broader political, economic, and moral discourse at Dartmouth, to both improve the quality of our political arguments and activist approaches, and contribute to the building of an intellectually effervescent and interpersonally authentic community. All are welcome, especially friends who may disagree with Jason.
