House Communities and Resident Fellows

The House Communities are designed to increase intellectual engagement, enhance community, and provide more residential continuity for our undergraduate students. The House Communities facilitate positive, dynamic interaction among students (both undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff, and the broader community; they foster conviviality and an enriched exchange of ideas beyond the classroom for everyone at Dartmouth. Each of the six House Communities is co-lead by a team of professionals (House Professor, Assistant Director, and Program Coordinator). In addition, each House Community leadership team consists of four Resident Fellows (RFs) and a team of Undergraduate Advisors (UGAs).

Role

Resident Fellows live within their assigned House Communities to get to know the residents of their House and commit an average of 8-10 hours per week during the fall, winter, spring, and summer terms. Some programming is expected during interim periods between terms. Resident Fellows serve on the House leadership teams and collaborate with others to offer House-wide programming opportunities that focus on community building or intellectual engagement. They provide an opportunity to bridge the connection among undergraduate and graduate students through in-house mentoring. Resident Fellows dine with House members on a regular basis.

Details of RF Responsibilities

  1. Area of Focus (40% - 50% of the time allotted)

Each Resident Fellow has an "area of focus" (AoF) which supports the House System in a specific way and is unique to each Resident Fellow. Common AoFs include supporting student government, interhouse competitions, program assessment, and house professor program support.

All Houses will have an Interhouse Council AoF, a student government AoF, and a Program Assessment AoF. The fourth AoF role will be determined by the House Leadership team to support the unique needs of each House.

  1. Social and Academic Programming (40% - 50% of the time allotted)

Resident Fellows have unique academic access to many departments on campus. Each RF is expected to produce programming for the house with specific emphasis on their academic pursuits. This can include but is not limited to inviting professors to the House for talks and dinners, presenting their research to the house, and supporting academic programs initiated by other House members. RFs also support the social programming for the house by attending student government meetings, initiating social programs, and meeting with students one on one.

  1. Leadership Meetings (10% - 20% of the time allotted)

Each RF is expected to attend weekly meetings with other leadership stakeholders of their house to plan for and respond to the needs of the community. RFs attend a weekly staff meeting with the Undergraduate Advisor (UGAS) led by the Assistant Director of the House. RFs also meet regularly with Program Coordinators, House Professors and the Assistant Directors of the house in groups and one on ones as directed by the House Professors and Assistant Directors.

Training

You are expected to attend all training sessions, which include evenings and weekends, and are excused from training dates only for academic requirements.

  • Fall 2024 Training & New Student Orientation: September 2, 2024 (on campus by 4pm)-September 16, 2024
  • Winter 2025 Training: January 3, 2025 (on campus by 4:30pm)-January 5, 2025
  • Spring 2025 Training: March 29, 2025 (on campus by 4:30pm)-March 30, 2025

Communication about all training expectations will come from the UGA.Training@Dartmouth.edu email account. Requests for absence should be sent to your supervisor by July 1st, 2024.

Presence

Because this is a live-in role, presence on campus during the undergraduate terms is expected and requests for absences of all kinds, including during interim periods, must be made proactively with supervisors.

Summer Term and Interim Periods

Summer Term and interim periods are times with fewer expectations, however, while RFs are living in the residence halls there may be programmatic support expectations and administrative tasks assigned. RFs should work with their leadership teams to be proactive to plan for these time periods to be supportive of the house system and make sure RFs have time to rest and recharge between the busier periods.

Compensation

As a requirement of the position, Resident Fellows live rent-free in on campus housing and will receive an 80 Block Choice meal plan (or equivalent) which is active during the undergraduate terms. Please note that meal plans are NOT active during interim periods and meals will be the responsibility of Resident Fellows.

Since our residential communities are not created equally, please note that some differences exist between what we can offer each Resident Fellow in the form of living space. In some communities the opportunity to access a semi-private bath or private half bath will be available, while others may be asked to use a semi-private community restroom. Additionally, some Resident Fellows may share common space with one another and a full bathroom. As much as possible, all RFs will be provided a private bedroom.

Room Attributes:

  • All Resident Fellow rooms are furnished with a bed frame and mattress (twin extra-long), dresser, desk, desk chair, and bookcase. If there is not a built in closet, then a wardrobe is provided. Furniture may not be removed from the room, but beds may be taken apart and stored under your personal bed, if you would like to bring one.
  • In addition, each room has a mirror, towel racks or hooks, and window shades or drapes on all of the windows.
  • While custodians clean undergraduate students' private bathrooms, Resident Fellows are responsible for cleaning their own private bathrooms.
  • Each room provides Wi-Fi and individual hardwired Ethernet service, free local and domestic long distance telephone service, and access to broadcast television.

Additional FAQs
