Academics and the UGA Position
We do not expect all of our UGAs to have a perfect GPA. What we expect is that UGAs model appropriate behavior around academics regarding study habits, time management skills, communication with faculty and Undergraduate Deans, following the Academic Honor Principle, and being in good academic standing. Assistant Directors and other members of the Residential Life staff will, in turn, provide support to all UGAs and help them seek out proper resources.
Good academic standing is defined as not falling within any of the categories of Academic Action, which includes Academic Risk, Academic Warning, Academic Probation, Academic Suspension, and Academic Separation.
What Does this Mean for UGAs?
- UGAs must notify their Assistant Director if they are placed on any of the Academic Action levels.
- UGAs on the Academic Warning tier or higher will need to work with their Assistant Director to create an action plan that will support them as they work to meet their academic goals. This may include anything from a specific study plan, meetings with your Undergraduate Dean, or conversations about time management skills and job priorities.
- If a UGA is placed on Academic Probation or Suspension, and takes time away from their academics and the college, they must speak with their Assistant Director or another member of the Residential Education office prior to returning to the UGA role. This will include creating a detailed plan to help manage academics and job responsibilities in the future as well as looking at the plan you have created with your Undergraduate Dean.
The goal of these policies is to help our UGAs be the best student employees possible. We truly believe that academics come first and want to partner with UGAs to ensure they are secure in their academic future.
These policies DO NOT give UGAs the ability to use their academics as a way to get out of UGA duties such as 1-on-1s or staff meetings. However, academic conflicts should be discussed with your Assistant Director and you may be asked to create a plan of action to deal with major conflicts. If you feel as though the UGA position will not work effectively with your academic goals or that you cannot be an effective student and UGA, you will need to discuss with your Assistant Director the possibility of leaving the UGA position.
Recruitment and Selection
- UGA Candidates who are on Academic Warning or above may be asked to discuss a plan for their academics with a member of the Residential Education office.
- The Residential Education office has the final decision on whether a UGA candidate will receive an offer, and may use academic standing when making such a determination.
If you have question or comments about this or any UGA Recruitment and Selection policy, please contact the UGA Recruitment and Selection Committee.
