House Professors

Who are the House Professors?

Founded in 2016, Dartmouth's House Communities are a residential initiative designed to enrich campus life by fostering intellectual engagement, meaningful connections, and a strong sense of belonging for members of the Dartmouth community. The House system aims to provide continuity throughout an undergraduate student's Dartmouth experience and to integrate academic and residential life in distinctive and lasting ways.

Reporting to the Dean of Undergraduate Student Affairs, the House Professor is the intellectual and cultural lead for their assigned House Community. This role serves as a member of a collaborative team that shapes the House Community experience through a termly slate of events. Working alongside colleagues in the Office of Residential Education– including Associate and Assistant Directors of Residential Education and a Program Administrator– the House Professor helps create a House environment that is intellectually engaging, inclusive, and reflective of Dartmouth's mission to educate the most promising students and prepare them for a lifetime of learning and responsible leadership.

The following outlines some key expectations associated with the House Professor role:

  • House Professors live in a single-family, college-owned residence near campus, designed to serve as a central setting for House programs and gatherings.
  • The House Professor devotes approximately 15 hours weekly to House activities.
  • This House Professor appointment is for an initial one-year term, with the possibility of renewal for an additional three years.
  • House Professors are generally expected to be on campus during all academic terms throughout their tenure. Upon review and approval, arrangements can be made for specific situations such as Foreign Study Programs and short-term research travel.

How to become a House Professor

We are pleased to invite nominations and letters of interest from tenured faculty for the role of Allen House Professor. After a remarkable tenure in Allen House, Professor Janice McCabe will complete her term as House Professor in June 2026. The new appointment begins July 1, 2026*.

Letters of interest should briefly address the candidate's approach to student engagement, collaboration with staff, interest in fostering academic community, and alignment with the mission of Dartmouth's House Communities. Please submit to undergraduate.student.affairs@dartmouth.edu no later than 9:00am on Friday, February 13, 2026.

We hope you will consider applying or nominating a colleague to help shape the intellectual and communal life of Allen House. If you have questions about the role or the application process, please feel free to reach out.

*The initial term for this appointment is one year, due to upcoming transitions in Division of Student Affairs leadership. The expectation is that given satisfactory performance, this will be followed by reappointment to a full term. We recognize that moving into the House Professor residence for the initial one-year term may present challenges for some candidates, in which case the move to campus may be delayed until the second year.
