Since 1783, societies have been an exciting and important part of the Dartmouth College experience. Literary societies on college campuses in the 1700s paved the way for what modern fraternal organizations look like today. Fraternities established on campus in 1842, gender-inclusive Greek organizations formed in 1976, and sororities were established in 1977 within the year of the admission of female students. Since then, our community has boasted one of the highest student involvement rates in the country. Today, there are 7 governing councils that represent over 50 organizations at Dartmouth!
Recognized Student Organizations within Greek Life and Student Societies agree to uphold six principles through their activities, programs, and philosophies: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Fellowship, Inclusiveness, and Accountability.
Our community is diverse, with both local and inter/nationally affiliated organizations representing the National Panhellenic Conference, the North-American Interfraternity Conference, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Multicultural Greek Council. With over 240 years of history at Dartmouth and representing over 70% of eligible students, our community is home to over 50 organizations.
The Office of Greek Life and Student Societies is responsible for leadership development, organizational management, and general administration for all fraternities, sororities, gender-inclusive Greek organizations, Greek honor societies, undergraduate societies, and senior societies at Dartmouth.

Joining Greek Life or Student Societies at Dartmouth provides an immediate community of peers who share common values and experiences. It creates opportunities to form meaningful and intentional friendships through social events, shared living spaces, and daily interactions. GLASS organizations offer access to a broad alumni network that spans industries, cities, and generations. Members can connect with graduates for mentorship, internships, and career advice. This built-in network can be a valuable resource both during college and long after graduation.
Being a member of a GLASS organization provides a peer network, study spaces, time with faculty, resources, and support in academic pursuits. For over 10 years, the GLASS community's average GPA each term exceeds the average Dartmouth student!
GLASS organizations provide structured opportunities to take on leadership roles within the organization. Members can develop skills in teamwork, communication, problem-solving, time management, and organization. These hands-on experiences help prepare students for leadership positions in their future careers. These are not just resume booster positions; they are real experiences that are transferable to future internships and jobs!
Philanthropy and community service are core components of GLASS organizations at Dartmouth. Members regularly participate in volunteer work and fundraising initiatives that support local and national causes. This commitment fosters a sense of responsibility and encourages giving back to the broader community while learning more about the Upper Valley where we live.

Membership in Dartmouth Greek Life and Student Societies doesn't end at graduation, it creates lifelong friendships and continued affiliation with the organization.
