About the Internship

The Udall Internship Program identifies future leaders in Indian Country and places them in Congressional and Federal agency offices in Washington, D.C. to learn firsthand how the Federal Government works with and impacts Tribes and Tribal communities. The Internship provides professional development for up to 12 deserving and qualified students annually, connecting them to a network of leaders and policymakers in Indian affairs.

Interns will:

  • Gain practical experience with the Federal legislative process
  • Be part of a community of 12 Native American and Alaska Native college, graduate, and/or law students who live and work in Washington D.C. during the summer
  • Have access to a network of Native professionals and alumni who work on behalf of Tribal Nations
  • Receive an award stipend to cover transportation to and from Washington D.C., housing, per diem during the program period, educational expenses, and miscellaneous expenses

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Udall Internship, you must fit the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. Citizens, Nationals, and Lawful Permanent Residents
  • Be an enrolled member of one or more Federally Recognized Indian Tribes
  • Be a current student or recent graduate of an accredited higher education institution
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate coursework
  • Meet other appropriate eligibility requirements set by the Udall Foundation

Application Process

A complete Udall Internship application includes the following:

  • A typed application form with your signature
  • An 800-word essay on a legislative act or public policy statement by either Morris K. Udall or Stewart L. Udall and its impact on your interests and goals;
  • A one-page professional resume
  • Transcripts for all university coursework, including undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate and law
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Documentation of your enrollment as a member of one or more Federally Recognized Indian Tribes that are included in the annual list of Indian Tribes published by the Secretary of the Interior pursuant to 25 U.S.C. § 5131
