Dartmouth Postgraduate Project Fellowships

Dartmouth postgraduate project fellowships provide support to graduating seniors and alums (within 5 years) who plan to undertake a substantial research project in the US or overseas during the next academic year.

About the Fellowship

Dartmouth postgraduate project grants support graduating seniors and alums (within 5 years) who plan to undertake significant research projects within the next academic year. These fellowships cannot be used for postgraduate study or dissertation work. Eligibility depends on the length of the project, its location (US or overseas), and the type of research: 

  • Long-term (9-12 month) projects based overseas: eligible for the Reynolds and/or the Brooks, depending on the topic. Applicants for the Brooks must be planning to pursue a career in architecture, urban planning, land conservation, historic preservation, architectural and urban history, and/or art history (but this fellowship is not intended to support work towards an academic degree).
  • Shorter-term (1-9 months) projects based in the US or overseas: eligible for the Dartmouth General Fellowship.

All applicants submit the same application, including a proposal and budget for the intended project. 

Award types

Research/creative projects

  • Must propose a well-conceived independent research or creative project
  • Not for postdoctoral study or support of graduate school projects or dissertation work

Travel and contemplation (H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship)

  • Up to one year of international travel and contemplation, while observing, reading, writing, sketching and acquiring knowledge that will be useful to the recipient's future work and to society
  • Must be planning to pursue graduate work and a career in architecture, urban planning, land conservation, historic preservation, architectural and urban history, and/or art history (but this fellowship is not intended to support work towards an academic degree)

Eligibility

  • Graduating senior or recent undergraduate alumni/ae (within the last 5 years)
  • Projects may be 1 month to 1 year in duration, although some of the funding sources can only be used for longer-term projects (8-12 months)
  • Projects may be in the U.S. or abroad
  • Financial need may be a factor
  • Preference is given to students/alumni who have not previously been awarded post-graduate funding from Dartmouth. Students who have previously received a Brooks or Reynolds are not eligible to apply again.

Application Process

 

All applications are due April 1 and must be submitted online. Application materials and instructions are available on the Canvas site. 

Recipients are selected by the Committee on Graduate Fellowships

  • Award amounts vary by fellowship (generally $5000 to $25,000) but do not necessarily cover the complete project cost.
  • Fellowships are funded by endowments that have specific criteria

Recipients are expected to write mid-year and/or final reports updating the Fellowships Office on their progress.
