BE & Thayer Graduate Students

Disabled students who are enrolled in Thayer's BE/Master's program will receive continuity to the extent possible and appropriate regarding the accommodations and services provided by Dartmouth. When students complete their final BE term and begin their Master's term(s), accommodation responsibilities shift from SAS to the ADA/504 Coordinator's office. This page provides details relevant to the undergraduate-to-BE and BE-to-Master's transition.

Undergraduate to BE Transition

SAS and its A11y Testing Center supports undergraduates as well as BE students. If you will be pursuing a BE, please notify your SAS advisor of your plans.

Unless your accommodations have expired or your A11y profile was archived as a function of having completed your undergraduate degree, you should be able to request most of your accommodations as you did previously. However, since 100-level and above courses are not in our A11y database, please email your SAS advisor if you cannot request accommodations in one or more of your courses (which SAS can manually add if course details are shared).

In addition to requesting your accommodation emails early in the term, remember to discuss implementation of your accommodations with your instructors. If you qualify for testing accommodations and need to take any exams in the A11y Testing Center, please continue to schedule your tests at least 3 business days in advance (at least 5 business days in advance for finals).

BE to Master's Transition

  1. During your final BE term, please email SAS to request to share your accommodation information from SAS to the ADA/504 Coordinator's Office.
  2. SAS will email you and copy ADA/504 Coordinator (ADAC) Linda Sullivan to confirm the accommodations you received as an undergraduate/BE student.
  3. The ADAC will send a welcome letter/email to you and offer a meeting, and will obtain documentation from SAS.
  4. During your meeting, the ADAC will explain the process for any accommodations needed in final term(s).
  5. The ADAC will provide access to the graduate student request form and ask that you complete the form.
  6. If changes in accommodations are necessary due to the essential elements of graduate level courses or for other reasons, the ADAC will inform you.
  7. The ADAC will prepare an accommodation plan and send it to you for review. If correct, you should sign the plan.
  8. Return the signed plan to the ADAC. The ADAC will countersign and return it to you, copying Dean Wilkinson.
  9. The ADAC will work with Thayer's Dartmouth Disability Access Professional, Assistant Dean Holly Wilkinson, to have accommodations arranged and implemented.

Important Distinctions Between Undergraduate, BE, and Graduate Programs

  • COURSE OBJECTIVES - Dartmouth offers many courses for both undergraduate and graduate students in the Thayer School of Engineering. Often graduate courses have different assignments or extended assignments towards deeper, richer analysis and thinking than the undergraduate courses.
  • ACCOMMODATED TESTING - BE students may still utilize the A11y Testing Center for accommodated exams. However, accommodated testing for Master's and other graduate students is not done in A11y Testing Center - Accommodated exams are coordinated by the instructor and Holly Wilkinson for Thayer graduate programs.
  • HOUSING - BE and Master's students need to obtain off-campus housing prior to the start of the term. Dartmouth only provides housing, including Greek housing, to undergraduates of the College.
  • DINING - BE, MEng, and other graduate students can purchase a meal plan through Dartmouth Dining Services, although these plans differ from undergraduate plans.  See Faculty Staff and Graduate Student Dining Plans for more information.
  • ACADEMIC SKILLS CENTER - The Academic Skills Center serves only undergraduate and BE students.
  • IDENTITY & WELLNESS SUPPORT - The Office of Pluralism & Leadership, Dartmouth Outdoors, the Student Wellness Center, Dartmouth Student Health Service at Dick's House, and the International Student Experience Office are a few of the offices that support students from undergraduate through graduate school.
