Important Academic Support Resources and Research Opportunities

Academic Support

Throughout your time at Dartmouth, we encourage you to take advantage of the many peer-led support resources available. Students who engage with these resources often experience stronger learning outcomes and demonstrate greater mastery on assessments.

Academic Skills Center

  • Provides tutoring, coaching, and learning strategies for Dartmouth undergraduates to help you succeed in your academics.

Dartmouth Emerging Engineers (DEE)

  • Provides prospective engineering majors with drop-in for free tutoring for pre-requisite MATH, PHYS, COSC, CHEM, and ENGS courses.

Learning Fellows Program (LFs)

  • Offers in-class support via active learning activities for students enrolled in Dartmouth's College of Arts and Sciences, in STEM (including Thayer School of Engineering), Arts & Humanities, and Social Sciences undergraduate courses.

Library Research Support

  • Offers meetings with research librarians for advice, tools, and services relevant to specific subject areas for Dartmouth undergraduate and graduate students.

Teaching Science Fellows (TSFs)

  • Help students registered for Biology and Chemistry courses by utilizing out-of-class review sessions and office hours.

Writing Center (RWIT)

Help students develop effective strategies for generating and organizing ideas, finding and evaluating research sources, and presenting and revising compositions.

Research Opportunities

Dartmouth Next: STEM Excelerator

NEXT is a university-wide initiative aimed at expanding opportunities for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program works in conjunction with E.E. Just, WISP, UGAR, Learning Fellows, Teaching Science Fellows, Darthmouth Emerging Engineers.

E.E. Just:
The E.E. Just Dartmouth Adventures in STEM (DAS) program is a five-day, pre-orientation summer course that introduces incoming undergraduates to the frontiers of science through mini courses taught by Dartmouth professors.

The E.E. Just Summer Internship offers Dartmouth students the opportunity to conduct full-time research with Dartmouth faculty during the 10-week summer term preceding their sophomore year.

WISP

The program creates collaborative learning environments so that all students can thrive in STEM. It especially aims to enhance the experiences of undergraduate students exploring the sciences during their first year. A comprehensive set of proven intervention strategies include:

  • Mentoring
  • Early hands-on research experience
  • Role models
  • Access to information
  • Building a community in the sciences

Undergraduate Research and Advising (UGAR)

UGAR oversees programs that provide opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in research with a Dartmouth College faculty mentor. These close collaborations between faculty and students provide a forum for faculty to teach and mentor undergraduates on a one-on-one basis outside the classroom. Students acquire first-hand experience in an academic field of research while developing skills such as critical thinking, information processing, and effective communication.
