UGAR Mission

UGAR oversees advising and research within the undergraduate curriculum. In keeping with Dartmouth’s core values of “academic excellence” and “independence of thought within a culture of collaboration,” UGAR promotes advising and research across campus as these foster the individualization of students’ academic exploration and intellectual growth.

Undergraduate Research

UGAR oversees programs that provide opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in research with a Dartmouth College faculty mentor. These close collaborations between faculty and students provide a forum for faculty to teach and mentor undergraduates on a one-on-one basis outside the classroom. Students acquire first-hand experience in an academic field of research while developing skills such as critical thinking, information processing, and effective communication.

Academic Advising

UGAR supports faculty in their roles as academic advisors and intellectual mentors to students and help students negotiate the myriad of academic opportunities in and out of the classroom. Faculty advisors are an important component of every student’s advising network, but students also have access to many other types of advisors and advising resources on campus.

Diversity and Inclusivity

“Dartmouth’s capacity to advance its dual mission of education and research depends upon the full diversity and inclusivity of this community. We must increase diversity, particularly among our faculty and staff. As we do so, we must also create a community in which every individual, regardless of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, disability, nationality, political or religious views, or position within the institution, is respected. On this close-knit and intimate campus, we must ensure that every person knows that he, she, or they is a valued member of our community.

Diversity and inclusivity are necessary partners. Without inclusivity, the benefits of diversity—an increase in understanding, improvement in performance, enhanced innovation, and heightened levels of satisfaction—will not be realized.”
