LATINE & CARIBBEAN HERITAGE CELEBRATION 2024
The theme for 'Creative Pioneers' is inspired by the year's goals and objectives to create spaces where we can talk about and celebrate different creative contributions of Latin American & Caribbean nations. From music to literature and film, events will allow for celebrating creative works while also opening discussions around intersecting identities. We aim to infuse creative opportunities with informative and social spaces centering experiences of Dartmouth community members and creative pioneers from around Latin America and the U.S.
Saturday, September 21st | Shabazz Lawn | 1-4PM
This will be OPAL/LCSA's annual LCHC 2024 Kickoff and Welcome Back event. Traditionally hosted outside on the north end of campus, we plan to have food, games, raffles, music, and tabling with various resources, offices and departments that support or would like to support the Latine, Hispanic, and Caribbean communities on campus.
In keeping with our theme, Creative Pioneers/Pioneros Creativos, to highlight the richness of literary creation in Latin America and the Caribbean. We seek to promote our book display at Still North Bookstore. This display will feature books written by authors from the Latine, Hispanic, Caribbean community, which bring us closer to different ways of interpreting, observing and experiencing the world, in order to broaden our horizons and bring us closer to different cultures.
This free gift will not only allow students a chance to recieve a free book from the store off of our display, but in exchange will allow students to share which stories they are interested in reading or learning about and provide us the student perspective of how they define being a "Creative Pioneer".
**Note: In order to participate you must recieve a voucher at select OPAL LCHC 2024 events. Only 15 vouchers will be given out, no repeat recipients**
Wednesday, October 2nd | Collis 303 | 7-8:30pm
At this collaborative event, we'll discuss pillars in our communities while decorating pillar jars. Infuse your jar with colors that reflect your identity, infuse your jar with scents, or make one for a friend. A few community pillars or icons that will be highlighted during this program hold intersecting identities in both the LGBTQ and Latine/Hispanic/Caribbean communities.
Friday. October 4th | Collis 101 | 4:30pm
LCSA, ISA/ISS and the Counseling Center will be holding a space for students to have conversations about immigration and what it's like coming to the USA. This conversation will be open to all students, with a highlight on Latine, Caribbean and International Students.
Monday, October 7th | Sarner Underground | 6-8:30pm
Join OPAL and East Wheelock House Community for an Afro-Cuban dance class led by professional dance instructor, John Shider from the Black Mamba Dance Company. The event includes a 2-hour workshop followed by a free dance segment. Beverages and light snacks will be provided.
Friday, October 11th | Loew Auditorium & Nearburg Forum | 6pm
The film centers Mexican Indigenous culture and the experience of having to run away from that culture due to dangerous environments, poverty and security. The prescreening of the movie would be a way to highlight an intermingling of indigenous and latin/hispanic culture. The event will provide a variety of snacks, music, and decorations that showcase Caribbean culture, considering a highlight on Mexican indigenous.
With the film brochure, we want to warn people of the themes that will be present in the movie. After the movie screening, there will be a reserved space in case people want to discuss the movie theme and to address these common topics that some families face.
This event aims to provide insight into the intercultural perspective between Indigeneity and Hispanity. We seek to promote, through film, an analysis of the conditions of systemic inequality faced by Indigenous and Native American peoples, as well as the challenges related to the westernization of the modern world, including those added by gender, social class and others.
