Academic Recovery Tutoring aka Individual Tutoring is very limited and reserved for students who demonstrate a specific need for individual tutorial support. Students are matched with an ART Tutor "individual tutor" for the term and meet for 1 hour weekly per course.
Requests for Individual Tutors may be submitted the Monday of Week 2 through the Friday of Week 7 of the term and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Requests are confidentially reviewed by a member of the Academic Skills Center staff.
Academic Recovery Tutoring is not offered for courses supported by Peer Tutoring* since small group and individual tutoring options are already offered for these courses weekly.
However, students can submit ART requests for all other courses. We will do everything possible to pair students with an ART Tutor and/or provide support through our other services.
*If a student has attended Peer Tutoring regularly (minimum of 3 sessions) and accessed all resources for the course, but is still in need of additional support. A member of the Academic Skills Center staff will consult with the Peer Tutor and Course faculty and review the request.
Requesting to work with an ART Tutor/continuing work as an ART Tutor involves a request/application process each term. Any students who have participated in ART whether as a Tutor or Tutee for a prior term must still submit an ART request/application to be reviewed by the Academic Skills Center each term.
The Peer Tutoring Program does not provide tutors for English & Creative Writing, Comparative Literature, or Writing courses. However, there are many other resources on campus to support you. See our Campus Resources page here.
Specifically, the Writing Center is a free service dedicated to helping members of the Dartmouth community develop more effective strategies for generating and organizing their ideas, finding and evaluating research sources, and presenting and revising compositions in a variety of media. At the Writing Center, you can meet one-on-one with an undergraduate or graduate tutor to discuss a paper, research project, or multimedia assignment. Tutors use a facilitative, rather than directive, approach in engaging writers in an active dialogue about their work. Whether you are brainstorming, drafting, or polishing, Writing Center tutors can provide feedback that will help you create final products of which you can be proud.
