The research on learning styles in inconclusive, but there can be value in understanding your learning preferences. Assess your learning and capitalize on your strengths. 

Felder's Index

The Felder's Index provides an immediate assessment of your learning styles that requires no username or password to take the test. It is a 44-question survey that assesses your study habits.

Developed by Barbara Soloman and Dr. Richard Felder, both from North Carolina State University.

Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)

The Learning and Study Skills Inventory is a quick, 80-item survey that assesses your study habits. It will provide you with a chart of your strengths and weaknesses, compared to other college students, in ten different areas. It will also provide suggestions about areas where you can improve your skills and strategies.

  1. Email Academic.Skills.Center@dartmouth.edu to get a username and password. These are required in order to take the inventory.
  2. Go to the LASSI site.
  3. Enter the school number, username and password and follow the instructions carefully. The inventory will take 10-20 minutes to fill out.
  4. After you submit the inventory, your scores will be calculated. You may print them for your convenience.
  5. (Optional) Schedule an academic coaching session at the Academic Skills Center to discuss the meanings of your scores.
