Voter Registration

Dartmouth students living in Hanover, New Hampshire are eligible to register to vote in New Hampshire. 

How/When to Register

Registering to vote in Hanover, NH is designed to be done in-person before a designated election official. There are several options for Dartmouth students to register to vote: 

  • Registering to Vote in NH. Updated 2023.
  • Pocket Voter Guide
  • Attend an on-campus voter registration drive (only students approved to be on-campus are eligible to attend these drives). 
  • Register at the Town Office (41 South Main Street), Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (No registration available during the seven days prior to any election.)
  • Voter Registration is available on Election Day.

While voter registration is an option on election day, it is highly recommended that you register to vote in advance.

What You Need to Register

Undergraduate Students Living in Campus Housing: 

  • Proof of Identity and Age: Bring any current driver's license or your Dartmouth ID. The name on the card must be the same as the name of the registrant. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed.
  • Proof of Citizenship: Bring a passport, passport card, or copy of a birth certificate. A photo of your passport or passport card is acceptable. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed. For naturalized citizens, we must have the name of the court, the city, and the date of the naturalization. 
  • Note: Undergraduates in campus housing do not need to bring additional paperwork to show proof of Hanover domicile. It will be confirmed on site by the town supervisors. 

Undergraduate Students Living Off-Campus: 

  • Proof of Identity and Age: Bring any current driver's license or your Dartmouth ID. The name on the card must be the same as the name of the registrant. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed.
  • Proof of Citizenship: Bring a passport, passport card, or copy of a birth certificate. A photo of your passport or passport card is acceptable. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed. For naturalized citizens, we must have the name of the court, the city, and the date of the naturalization. 
  • Proof of Hanover Domicile: Bring a signed, current lease with your name or a utility bill. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed. 

Please Note: Dartmouth students who do not live in Hanover, regardless if in Dartmouth housing, must register to vote in the town in which they are domiciled. 

Graduate Students Living in Campus Housing: 

  • Proof of Identity and Age: Bring any current driver's license or your Dartmouth ID. The name on the card must be the same as the name of the registrant. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed.
  • Proof of Citizenship: Bring a passport, passport card, or copy of a birth certificate. A photo of your passport or passport card is acceptable. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed. For naturalized citizens, we must have the name of the court, the city, and the date of the naturalization. 
  • Proof of Hanover Domicile: Bring a letter/statement from your dean or school confirming that you reside in a Hanover dormitory. 

Graduate Students Living Off-Campus: 

  • Proof of Identity and Age: Bring any current driver's license or your Dartmouth ID. The name on the card must be the same as the name of the registrant. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed.
  • Proof of Citizenship: Bring a passport, passport card, or copy of a birth certificate. A photo of your passport or passport card is acceptable. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed. For naturalized citizens, we must have the name of the court, the city, and the date of the naturalization. 
  • Proof of Hanover Domicile: Bring a signed, current lease with your name or a utility bill. If none are available, an affidavit can be executed.
