Torrey Peters is the author of the bestselling novel Detransition, Baby (Random House, 2021), which was a finalist for the 2021 National Book Critics Circle Award for the John Leonard Prize, longlisted for the Women's Prize, and was a selection for Roxane Gay's Audacious Book Club. She is also the author of the novellas Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones and The Masker.

Detransition, Baby is about what happens at the emotional, messy, vulnerable corners of womanhood that platitudes and good intentions can't reach. Throughout the book, Peters brilliantly and fearlessly navigates the most dangerous taboos around gender, sex, and relationships, gifting us a thrillingly original, witty, and deeply moving novel. Kirkus Reviews calls the debut, "Smart, funny, and bighearted. Trans women will be matching their experiences against Reese's, but so will cis women—and so will anyone with an interest in the human condition." And Garth Greenwell says, "It's the smartest novel I've read in ages. Peters manages to be utterly savage and lacerating while also conveying endlessly expanding compassion. It's kind of a miracle." Peters is set to write the pilot episode of the TV adaptation for Detransition, Baby with Grey's Anatomy writer-producers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan lined up to serve as showrunners on the half-hour dramedy adaptation of the novel.

Peters holds an MFA from the University of Iowa and a Masters in Comparative Literature from Dartmouth College. She splits her time between Brooklyn and an off-grid cabin in Vermont.

Join author Torrey Peters GR'13 and Professor Mingwei Huang in a moderated conversation about gender and creative writing, including Peters' experience as a trans woman at Dartmouth and in the publishing industry. An audience question and answer session will follow the conversation, providing an opportunity for the audience to directly engage with Peters and Professor Huang. The event will conclude with book signings.

Free copies of Detransition, Baby will be given to the first 50 undergraduate students in attendance (Dartmouth ID required). Detransition, Baby will also be available for purchase on-site from Still North Books.

Mingwei Huang (she/her) is assistant professor of women's, gender, and sexuality studies, fellow with the Consortium of Studies in Race, Migration, and Sexuality, and faculty advisor for the Sexual Assault Peer Alliance (SAPA).

Huang is an interdisciplinary scholar of race, migration, gender, and sexuality, trained in American Studies and specializing in Afro-Asia and transnational feminism. Her research explores the reconfiguration of race, capitalism, and empire underway in the 21st "Chinese Century" and their historical entanglements with Western colonialism. Huang's first book is an ethnography of contemporary Chinese capitalism, migration, and world-making in Johannesburg, South Africa that follows the transnational flows of migrants, commodities, and money from China to South Africa and back. Her work has been published in Scholar & Feminist Online, Radical History Review, International Journal of Cultural Studies, and Public Culture (forthcoming). Huang's research has been funded by the Social Science Research Council and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research and supported by the Centre for Indian Studies at the University of Witwatersrand. Since arriving at Dartmouth in 2018, Huang has been involved with the Asia/America working group and the Consortium of Studies in Race, Migration, and Sexuality, and previously the South-South Forum.
