Become an Individual Tutor

Apply

Individual tutors must apply for the position every term. Your application does not carry over from term-to-term. Applications to be an individual tutor will open by the first day of class each term and will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the term.

Matches are granted on an as-needed basis rather than on the basis of specific match requests. If you apply to be an Individual Tutor you may not receive the tutee you are requesting, so please only apply to be an Individual Tutor if you are willing to tutor for any student who requests tutoring for the courses you are hoping to support.

Qualifications

Tutors must have received at least an A- in the course or an equivalent AP/credit for specified courses. There are, however, some exceptions to this rule! To see if you're eligible to be a tutor, please email the Peer Tutoring Program.

For tutors who placed out of taking a specific course due to AP credit, it is your responsibility to read the syllabus of the course you want to tutor. We depend on you to be knowledgeable of the material that will be covered in the course.

If it has been a while since you have taken the course, we encourage you reach out to the faculty for their recommendations of material to review so you can be a great resource for your tutee(s).

Time Commitment

Individual tutors are expected to have in their schedule up to 1 hour per week available for each tutee (depending on individual tutee need).

Rate of Pay

The Peer Tutoring Program pays its tutors $19.00/hour.

Specific Match

The meetings between specific tutor/tutee and the Peer Tutoring Program are limited and are not guaranteed. Details to request a specific tutor are provided on the individual tutor request form. Individuals wishing to work together must complete this process before the match is taken under consideration. Completion of this process does not guarantee that you will be matched. Students demonstrating exceptional need for Individual Tutoring take precedence over specific tutor/tutee matches.

Please only apply to be an Individual Tutor if you are willing to tutor for any student who requests tutoring for the courses you are hoping to support.

Haven't Been Matched?

If you have applied to be a tutor, but haven't received an email from us yet, it's because we haven't received any requests from students for tutors in that course. If you want to increase your chances of being matched, we encourage you to apply to be a tutor in a different course in which you have done well. Please email peer.tutoring.program@dartmouth.edu at any time if you would like more tutees, or for information on what courses we are experiencing a demand in.
