Conference Travel Grants

• Conference grants are awarded ONLY for costs directly associated with conference attendance (e.g. registration, travel, accommodations) and NOT for personal expenses such as professional clothing.
• The presentation can be a talk, poster, or other format, and the student can be an individual author or one of multiple authors on the project.
• Students may apply for a conference grant prior to confirmation that their research has been accepted.
  • Funding will not be issued until the student has that confirmation.
• Students must be recognized in the conference or meeting program as a presenter in order to awarded a conference grant.
  • Funding is not awarded for students to attend conferences if they are not presenters.
  • Funding is not awarded for presenting at a conference on campus or a conference that is sponsored by Dartmouth.
• The research must have been conducted in collaboration with or under the supervision of a Dartmouth faculty member (college or professional school faculty)
• Research conducted for a class is not eligible for funding. Contact the department or program that offered the class to determine whether they offer conference funding.
• Students are eligible for one Senior Conference Grant and one Undergraduate Conference Grant during their undergraduate years at Dartmouth (see below).
  • Students will be awarded one grant per conference – students may not apply for both grants for the same conference.

Timeline:

• Applications are accepted each term from the first day of the term through the last day of regularly scheduled classes.
• Applications are reviewed twice each term:
  • Friday of week 5
  • Last day of classes

Process:

• When the student submits an application, the student's faculty research mentor will receive a notification requesting their endorsement of the application.
• Applications will ONLY be reviewed if BOTH the student application AND the faculty endorsement have been submitted by the review date.
• Applications will not be reviewed for conferences that have occurred prior to the review date.
• Funding decisions will be sent within two weeks of the review date.
• Funding will be available 2-3 weeks after award notifications.
• Once funding has been disbursed for a given term, no further applications will be considered until the following term.

PLAN AHEAD! No exceptions will be made to this timeline and process.

Maximum of $1000

• The presentation must be at a national or international academic conference (e.g. Society for Neuroscience, the American Geophysical Union, American Astronomical Society)
  • Presentations at an undergraduate research conference held by another college/university are not eligible for these grants (but see Undergraduate Conference Grants below)
• Only seniors are eligible
  • In some cases, grants may be awarded to students presenting research after graduation. The student must provide a compelling justification for the request, and the conference cannot take place more than 1 month after graduation. The student must apply for the funding at least 2 weeks before they graduate.

Funding for students to present research at conferences:

• Neukom Institute Travel Grants: For presenting research that involves computational techniques in any academic discipline
• Leslie Center for the Humanities Student Professional Development Fellowships: for internships, conferences, workshops, or other professional development activity related to the humanities.
• Irving Institute Student Grants for Professional/Educational Growth: funding to attend or present research at an academic conference
• Academic departments: Some academic departments/programs have funding for students to present at conferences. Funding is generally restricted to majors. Contact individual departments/programs for information.

Other potential sources of funding for presenting and/or attending conferences:

• Rockefeller Center Student Conference and Event Mini-Grants: conference registration fees for an individual student or to cover the costs of an on-campus event or program by a student organization
• Discourse Funds: funds for promoting dialogue and influencing social change including on-campus student events or attendance at off-campus events and conferences
• Dartmouth 4E Fund: funds to reduce financial barriers for students receiving financial aid from the College
• Dartmouth NEXT: STEM-based initiative for funding student involvement in research activities and conference participation
