    In this reflection, Hanlon Scholar Nica Alimzhanov '29 offers a candid and thoughtful perspective on the Hanlon Scholars Winterim Research Immersion trip of December 2025. A cornerstone of the first-year experience, the annual Winterim program brings students into direct engagement with a wide range of research fields, encouraging them to explore interdisciplinary methods, reflect on their own intellectual paths, and build community as a cohort. For the Class of 2029, the journey to Oʻahu and the Big Island of Hawaiʻi provided a particularly rich setting to examine themes of sustainability, ecology, language, culture, and geology through hands-on learning and dialogue.

  • Dartmouth Professor's GNEISS Project "CT Scans" the Aurora

    Professor of Physics & Astronomy Kristina Lynch, a long-time SURFD faculty mentor, is the principal investigator on GNEISS (Geophysical Non-Equilibrium Ionospheric System Science). The rocket mission, funded in part by NASA, aims to reconstruct how electrical currents behave in the ionosphere when the Northern Lights are active. A recent article in The Debrief covers the launch of GNEISS and what researchers on the project hope to accomplish.

  • Hanlon Scholars 2025 Research Immersion Trip

    Each winter, the Scholars Programs team leads the cohort of first-year Hanlon Scholars on a research immersion trip designed to broaden students' understanding of what research can look like across disciplines, methodologies, and communities. For the 2025 Winterim experience, the team selected Oʻahu and the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, a choice that closely aligned with the academic interests of the Class of 2029 Hanlon Scholars.
