Driver Approval Process
For certain DCSI programs (e.g., SIBs), students must be licensed drivers. For other programs (e.g., OLE and Growing Change), students may participate without driving; however, the Center needs student drivers to assist with transportation, so we ask all eligible students to become approved drivers.
Eligible students are those with a U.S. or Canadian driver's license who have had the license for more than 1 year, have driven more than 1500 miles total, and have no vehicular accidents on their record that resulted in injury or more than $2000 in damage.
To drive for DCSI-sponsored programs, students must complete both a College Approved Driver process and a DCSI-specific training. Once approved, all drivers must comply with local and state laws, as well as the Dartmouth College Driver and Student Driver policies.
To become an approved driver for DCSI, students should follow this process:
1. Apply to participate in a DCSI Youth Education & Mentoring program such as SIBs, OLE, or Growing Change.
2. Once accepted to the program, you will receive an online slideshow orienting you to youth mentoring and the Upper Valley. The last slide includes a link to the Student Driver Application form, which initiates the College Approved Driver process. Complete the online form.
3. Once Transportation Services has processed your form, you will receive an email inviting you to complete a Driver Safety course on the Canvas learning management system. The course takes 1-2 hours. Complete the course within 3 business days, scoring 90% or above on the quiz at the end of each module.
4. Take a screenshot showing your successful completion of the course, and email it to Social.Impact.Cars@dartmouth.edu.
5. Attend the in-person orientation for your program, where you'll complete the DCSI-specific driver training.
