Scientific research is Shlosman's passion. "It's like a love affair, you have to love the whole thing," she says. "I think it's almost a way of life, or a way of thinking, and once you get into it it's not a career—it's a calling."

When she first starting working in the Dartmouth Biomedical Engineering Center (DBEC) as a first-year student, Nivedita Nagaraj '16 never expected that studying knee and hip replacements would become such an important part of her undergraduate experience.

During her first year at Dartmouth, through the WISP first-year research internship program, Lin was matched with William G. North, a professor of physiology and neurobiology at the Geisel School of Medicine. She worked with North from then on, researching cancer and novel treatment options, including peptides and immunotherapies.

Alden says the networking and mentorship encouraged by WISP are its most valuable aspects. In particular, the mentorship program "gives the program more of a personal touch, and makes people feel more connected to WISP," she says. Alden cites her WISP mentor as a tremendous resource during her first year. "Even if we only met a couple times a term, it was nice to ask her any questions I had."
