Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowships

The annual application deadline is February 15.

About the Program

"Creating pathways to the US academy and shaping the future of the humanities"

Established in the 1988/1989 academic year, the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) is committed to broadening the range of scholarly perspectives in the US academy, with a focus on the humanities and the humanistic social sciences. Its name honors Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, the noted African American educator, statesman, minister, former president of Morehouse College, and mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The MMUF program emphasizes mentoring, research support, and student cohort building to prepare students for entry into PhD programs and eventual careers as scholars and faculty members. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their prior coursework, their plans for a major, and their reflection on the ways that their life experiences and academic aspirations would contribute to MMUF's goals of advancing a broad range of scholarly perspectives. The program does not accept students who intend to go on to medical school, law school, or other professional schools.
