"HEART & SOIL: ECOLOGICAL RESILIENCE AND SOCIAL IMPACT IN PUERTO RICO"

Winterim Educational Immersion Trip

DETAILS

The Partner

The Winterim Trip for 2019 will be a 10-Day educational immersion experience to work with El Departamento de la Comida (El Depa), a sustainability and food justice collective in Puerto Rico. Because of their commitment to collaboration and intersectional equity, the organization is a respected food justice innovator on the island.

El Depa has been profiled in Eater, Vogue, and CNN. To see some of their latest work, follow them on Instagram @eldepartamentodelafood.

The Trip

From December 3rd to 13th, students on this trip will take an ecological justice tour of the island of Puerto Rico. Beginning in San Juan, the cohort will visit El Depa’s partner farms and gardens to learn about their work and to contribute to the regenerative design of each site, including through assisting in projects like planting and building compost systems. Through community-building (heart) and project-based learning (soil), students will be invited to carefully analyze the sociopolitical context of ecological sustainability and food sovereignty in both Puerto Rico and the Upper Valley, and their roles in this work at Dartmouth and beyond.

Key Themes: ecological sustainability, food justice, sovereignty, community-building and dynamics, intersectionality

The trip will leave on Tuesday, December 3rd and return the following Friday, December 13th of 2019.

LODGING

*Immersion trips through DCSI emphasize simple living and sustainability. Therefore, on this journey, students will be both camping and staying in hostels. While camping, all cohort members will have access to quality tents and air mattresses, as well as showers and restrooms.

FOOD

*El Depa originally began as a restaurant and its founders believe that we can better understand the land and our communities through food. As such, food and eating communally is at the heart of this trip. Meals will be prepared by chefs and local community members using as much local and sustainable produce as possible. Most meals will be vegetarian.
