Alternative Spring Breaks

ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK TRIP DETAILS:

The Dartmouth Center for Social Impact is proud to partner with housing communities to launch house-based Alternative Spring Break programs. This year, we are working with Allen, East Wheelock, and West House to host meaningful and dynamic ASB trips. Each trip has been intentionally designed to explore pressing social challenges that are meaningful to members of each housing community.

See below to learn more about the trip designed for your house, and to apply to join your housing community in this important work!

ALLEN HOUSE
"Place, Story, and Inequality in New Orleans"

Join members from Allen House on an ASB trip to New Orleans, Louisiana to study the effects of Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches in the city's Lower Ninth Ward. This part of the city was severely impacted by Katrina's flooding and has had the slowest recovery rate of all the neighborhoods in New Orleans to date. Trip participants will work with the organization lowernine.org to restore homes in the Lower Ninth Ward, while also spending intentional time together exploring how place and inequality are related to the lasting effects of the storm.

Key themes: race, gender, and class identity, storytelling, climate change, housing security

Dates: March 14 – 21, 2020

EAST WHEELOCK HOUSE
"The Politics of Recovery in San Juan"

East Wheelock House's Alternative Spring Break trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico will explore the politics and policy of climate change, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Maria, by partnering with El Departamento de la Comida. El Depa supports the ecological resilience and decolonization of food on the island by directly supporting farms and farmers. The Puerto Rico cohort will form a "Solidarity Brigade" to directly serve a specific farming project related to renewable energy and sustainable farming. Additionally, students will spend time learning about the impact the hurricane had on environmental and urban development, community connections, and the relationship between Puerto Rico and mainland United States.

Key themes: environmental sustainability and ecological resilience, food justice, climate change, public policy

Dates: March 14 – 21, 2020

WEST HOUSE
"Asylum-Seekers in New England: Understanding the Nuances of Immigration, Community, and Belonging in Portland"

West House's inaugural Alternative Spring Break trip to Portland, Maine will invite participants to explore the nuances of immigration, including how policy impacts the varied experiences of refugee and asylee populations in Maine. In partnership with the Maine People's Alliance, a grassroots organization dedicated to increasing the number of community leaders positioned to impact social change, this ASB will provide cohort members with a unique experience to directly participate in this transformative process through letter writing, canvassing, and supporting MPA during their Spring legislative session.

Key Themes: immigration policy, community organizing, democracy and public opinion, community and belonging

Dates: March 21 – 28, 2020
