First-Generation Student Awarded a Rhodes (USA Today)


Ridwan Hassen ’15

, the son of Somali and Ethiopian refugees, was the first in his family to go to college, notes USA Today in a story about the Dartmouth computer science major who was recently named a 2015 Rhodes Scholar.

“My dad was denied an education,” Hassen tells the newspaper. “They always say education is the most important thing.”

Hassen plans to study public policy at Oxford. “If I did science at Oxford I’d be in the lab again and get the same experience. Studying policy is a way to challenge myself in a new environment.”
