Foundations of Interfaith Engagement

Overview of the Program

The Foundations of Interfaith Engagement program supports Dartmouth community members in deepening understanding across religious, spiritual, and secular worldviews. This foundational course strengthens our shared capacity for dialogue, reflection, and belonging. Foundations of Interfaith Engagement was developed in partnership with Interfaith America, this course introduces the essential knowledge and skills of interfaith literacy through stories, reflection activities, and real-world applications relevant to life at Dartmouth.

Since 2024, The Foundations of Interfaith Engagement has been in development through a collaboration between Interfaith America, the Tucker Center for Spiritual and Ethical Life, and IDE. The student course launched in Fall 2025 as part of the Wellness Education (WE) credit program. Building on that success, Foundations of Interfaith Engagement will officially launch for staff, faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars in early 2026.

This campus-wide launch supports Dartmouth's commitment to holistic well-being, pluralism, and dialogue across difference; empowering participants to engage with empathy and curiosity while strengthening inclusive teaching, advising, and workplace collaboration.

Student Feedback

"Attending the session with the panel discussion of various interfaith leaders was most impactful for me. It allowed me to witness firsthand how leaders of different faiths on campus more or less had the same vision of hospitality and acceptance for those curious to seek something deeper and more meaningful in life. Going forward, I will take a more open approach to reaching out to those whose religions differ from my own in order to find common ground."

"Most meaningful was just getting to learn about other religions/worldviews more deeply—more than knowing they exist, knowing what they value and why. I will take this with me in conversations I have with my friends, approaching them with empathy and understanding as I seek to learn more about their religions and foster genuine conversations"

"I think the most meaningful thing for me was being able to actually attend events of other faiths and interact with the people there, and one thing I will take going forward is how dialogue is really important to understanding not just people of other traditions but other people in general."
