Join the Native American Program and Indigenous Peoples' Month planning committee for a lunch and learn with Shgendootan (Shgen) George (Tlingit) as she shares the Tlingit cultural art forms of Chilkat and Raven’s Tail weaving, exploring how her art practice is deeply rooted in family and community traditions. She will provide a brief history of these weaving styles within their cultural context, their role in Tlingit society, ceremonies, and storytelling, as well as their material contexts - the natural fibers, dyes, and techniques used to create them. Shgen will also share her own work and speak to the meaning and stories woven into her art. Immediately following lunch and lecture, she will offer a live demonstration, giving participants the opportunity to see traditional techniques and ask questions. Sponsored by the Special Programs and Events Committee.
